The BMC-500 was the first CCD Betamovie recorder. Sony claimed to incorporate 291,000 pixels into the CCD (Charged Coupled Device) module which was ahead of its time. The unit also incorporated On Screen Graphics which could be seen through the view finder or burnt on to tape.

The unit weighed 2.5kg which was the same as it predecessor the BMC-200 but it was much smaller.
