Two suggestions: 1- Check the switch on the side and make sure it is set to 'Line', when in 'Camera' it will wait for the camera remote switch. 2- Make sure the cassette has the little red tab at the bottom. This is the safety tab and without it the machine won't record.
Good luck

M3 shifting Focus..... Hi I just got myself a Sony M3 with a Tamron lens and I have the following problem. When I zoom in on an object and focus, then I zoom out and the object goes out of focus. According to the seller a good cameraman should know, because it has something to do with a procedure. Anyone a clue ?
frank "M3 shifting Focus..... "at the camera side of the lens you've got a thingy called flange-back zoom in and focus , then zoom out and refocus using the flange-back adj.repeat this until the focus doesn't change when you zoom
Jim. No U-matic portable will record without a signal.

Help! Have just fulfilled a 15yr ambition and bought a U-matic system (a V05800/RM440 controller and two VP5030 players) and I have a very silly question. It all seems to be working fine but when I tried to connect a monitor to the VP5030 via the RF socket I'm getting nothing (I've tried on all three machines). I know there were some models that didn't connect to regular TVs but surely they wouldn't have RF sockets on the back. Does anyone know if I'm missing something on the settings? The 5030 doesn't seem to have many output controls at all but it's been about ten years since I last worked with these kinds of machines and I think I might be missing something dumb/obvious. Hope someone can help - I have films that desperatly need finishing before I become to old/fat/bald to do so!
RF outputs will only work if the RF modulator unit is present. Should be inside oblong panel at rear of machine? Otherwise you have to use the composite output to a scart connection on your TV monitor and select line in (AV) on the TV.
I have a couple of 5 1/4 UCA-10 & uca 60 Vidoecassette Tapes I want to update and transfer to VHS and DVD. What machince do I need to play the large old tapes (from early 80s) and what do I need to transfer to DVD (a good machine and cables or cords). I appreciate the help. You can email me with your response. Thanks in advance.
Woo-hoo! Thanks for the info - job done!
Hello, I have just purchased a Sony VO-5800PS, can anyone advise me regarding suitable tapes, or any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Malc
The "RF" connection is "RF Off-Tape" used for connection to a TBC. It's not, nor is it ever (even with a fitted RF modulator) an RF TV signal output.
Gareth :-D °o°
just spotted this site after doing some research for a client. Re: Sony VO-6800. Unit is A-1 in all respects, but I cannot get it record an image from the camera. I am trying to use a Panasonic 341 B&W ccd camera with a bnc 1 volt p/p output. The camera works fine when plugged directly into the a Sony monitor, but when plugged into therecorders bnc video in jack, all that you see is a dark unstable screen that flickers. Am I tryiny to use the wrong camera, wrong impedence match, or what? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jim [email protected]
Gareth, I appreciate that the RF off tape connection is for the TBC drop out compensator, but I have used machines with a modulator and got RF signal out of the antenna output on some machines which is a coax socket, as opposed to the bnc connector for the off tape RF. I cannot remember exactly which machines they were, but probably playback only machines like the 5030 or 7 series etc. and certainly the older 2030, 2600 and 2850 top loading machines. So, from experience, I dispute your claim that there has never been an RF output signal!
Oh, and while I think about it, the 5030 would not have an off tape RF connection anyway, it was not designed as an edit source. These sockets are normally found on high band machines like the BVU 800 etc.
I have a lot of once-used umatic tapes of various time lengths and would be willing to give them away to anyone who could collect from London W1.
Hope somebody can help me with this:
I want to make a connection from the 8 pins connector marked "TV" on the Sony VP-7040 to my dvd-recorder.I assume this connector has the RGB signal on in.
Is this possible and does somebody know wich connections should be made to get the rgb signal?
Henk, this connector has only composite video out and audio L & R out. No RGB. There is no RGB output from a U-matic.

Bonjour. Je désire vendre 2 magnétos U-matic 1 JVC CR 4400 E , 1 SONY VO 4800 PS .
hi
I have a BVU-950 with a problem. I get a rolling horizontal distortion line all through my playback of prerecorded tapes. The line has some video tearing. Also, I get the same with horizontal picture rolling when I record then play back?
What's wrong with my machine? I have no TBC board installed. Does that make the difference? Do I have worn heads? Something else? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Kevin - it sounds like a sync problem. Have you got an external device plugged in when you are playing the tapes (i.e. spg or camera or another VTR)? Is the mode switch in the "normal" position?
Hi...I'm looking to sell a VO-2600 on eBay and am trying to get an idea how much to charge. It's in good shape, if a little dusty. I also have 2 dozen tapes, all in very good condition. Any help would be appreciated.
Duffy, Start it off at £1 or 1$ or the listing fees may exceed the highest bid! Sorry....
HI! A question regarding the camera use for a Sony 6800. Unit is immaculate, and seems to perform all functions properly, However when I try to record, no usable image is seen. Perhaps I am trying to use the wrong camera. It is a panasonic WV330 ccd b&w unit with a bmc vidio out. (the camera is fine when connected to a monitor)I am connecting it to the sony's bmc "video in" connector instead of the dedicated "camera" input. Any thoughts? Your help would be appreciated! Jim
Jim - the obvious question - is the camera / line switch in the line position?

please could someone help me b4 i go nutz - does ne1 know where i can get a copy of the user manual for a Sony BVE-600? in ne format TIA
Hi,
I have acquired a Sony VO-5630 to transfer a number of old (roughly 15 years) tapes to a digital format. However, I have an odd problem - on first play the tape generally plays Ok but if I rewind and play it again the picture has gone - audio still plays. Now what is really odd is that if I pause the tape the picture appears and if I fast forward the picture displays fine! Anybody have any ideas what is going on?
Chris
Chris - sounds like tape tension. Should be pot on one of the SY or SV boards, but I cannot remember which. Don't tweak anything until you are sure that it is the right one or you will mess the whole thing up. May be marked "back tension" or something like that.
Does anyone know if it is possible to get a RF signal (RF OFF TAPE that is) from a BetaMAX ?? I want to connect a Betamax to a TBC for the DOC.
Peter
The manual for a BVE-600 is a few hundred pages, which I am not going to scan. If you can be more specific what you are looking for, I may be able to help you.
hi there sir or madam i have this jvc dvd player with the model number xv-m555bk but when i put on vcd cds the sound comes but when i put dvd cd the sound doesnt come
This has been said before - this is a forum for people interested in or using the obsolete U-matic video format, NOT the fountain of all knowledge, especially for modern systems such as DVD machines.
Hello all. We are having trouble with a VO-5600 here at our office. We recently purchased the unit from eBay. Slight dent on the side of the unit, was working well until now. The unit will not accept a tape. When inserted, the tape makes it to the base of the pin which will open the tape flap and allow the tape to spool. After this, the tray motor(?) should take over and pull the chassie down with the tape, lifting the tape flap and spooling the tape out. This does not happen with this unit. Once the tape if fully docked it will not budge any further. Is this a problem with the entire chassie, a wiring issue? Any hints would be most appreciated, and I will provide further details if I was inaccurate or unclear with the above. Thank you all for your time.
Mark, check the threading ring is not jamming, i.e. the hinged posts are not becoming trapped anywhere. Also the belt on the threading motor is not slipping/broken. Do not use any lubricant as this can cause even more problems especially if it gets on your tapes and the head drum.
Hi RP,
Many thanks for your posting on the Umatic PAL site. You have confirmed a suspicion I had on the tension as the belt that drives the actual tape spindles has been replaced. I've had a look to see if I could track down the pots you mention but I couldn't find anything obvious. I wondered if the following info from my investigation helps at all. So..
SY Board - (horizontal at the bottom) only 1 pot, not labelled anything except RV2. This board does have a number of cables that seem to go to the main tape drive motor.
SV Board (vertical) - has about 12 different pots, doesn't have anything marked as back tension, but it does have pots for capstan, drum, slowspeed, trcon, swb, amongst others
YC (vertical board next to SV) - looks to control all the video functions such as chroma, lumiance, gain etc.
Does this help at all? Any thoughts are highly appreciated before I start fiddling!
Regards
Chris

Need Delay Line For Sony DXC 3000 AP Camera new . or card board used
any body know the FREQ ??? MHZ of the Delay Line or can get it from have the Manual please writ
[email protected] (entirely fictitious)
Chris, I am not sure as I have not owned one of these for a while. I would be loathed to touch anything on those boards. You could try replacing the pinch roller, though. These are all the same for all the desktop U-matics, so it doesn't matter whether it's for a BVU200 or VO5850.
Thanks RP - I looked at and cleaned the pinch roller and it looks to be in good condition with no obvious signs of wear. The problem is occuring with all tapes (whether previously played or not), but they are still fine in pause or search. Would you say that you are reasonably confident that this is a tension/speed issue? Is there anything else that it could be such as signal level?
Does anyone have any documentation on a Sony VO-5630, particularly in relation to tape speed?
Hello U-matic users.I just started to get U-matic stuff and I have Tapes of the Type AMPEX 187 KCA-60 that do not wind corectly in my VO5630 machine, while other Tapes work. So my question is, are there some "well known" Tape types to stay away of because of stickyness or the like?
Thanks in advance, Matthias

Dear Forum!I bought a very cheap BV-800P. When I try to record the "Auto Off" light lights up for short time and the machine stops.Sometimes, the cassette is loaded, but the tape gets not winded arround the head. What kind of signal should be feeded to the "external sync" connector? Is black burst ok?Unfortunately I havn't a user manual...Thank you in advance

Hi everyone. If anybody is interested in buying a working Lo Band U-matic edit suite, comprising 2 x 5850s, RM 440, 2 x JVC 14" monitors, Tascam mixer, cables and manuals, have a look on ebay. Consumer electronics/professional,studio/video. I used this suite between 1985 and 1995, editing a variety of projects including a number of current affairs programmes for channel 4. I'm really impressed by the passion shown on this site and would like to see these machines go to a good home. Auction on 'til monday 11th July, Best wishes.
Till.Rückerli, if you are using this unit as a stand alone recorder you do not need to feed any signal into the external sync connector. The auto off usually occurs if there is moisture present. It may well be that the machine was stored in a garage or outbuilding before your purchase and there is condensation in the machine. Keep the machine in a fairly warm environment for a while. (Like Spain!!!)
Hello there! my first time - so i have available.... SONY Matic Portable Videocorder... Model# AV3400 - NO.TV-122 in a over the shoulder casing. good condition. Could anyone kindly tell me if it is worth anything. My mom is trying to sell all my things at a garage sale right now.... not to happy! but my son needs to eat. thanks in advance for any responses. Cherie
Cherie,I hope your son is not too hungry. Let me put it this way, Sony discontinued the AV3400 in 1979. Unless you find a collector who may pay a few dollars, the unit is pretty much worthless. Sorry.
Where I live, I cannot get OTA (over-the-air) signals that are consideredgood. I live in a valley, called Val Verde, 45 miles northwest of LosAngeles, CA and Mt. Wilson where the majority of the TV and DTV transmittersare located. Since there are only about 1,000 homes in Val Verde there isntany cable company that services my area. Even the phone company cannotprovide DSL service to my area.
Two months ago I got tired of watching the hour glass as I surfed theInternet using a 56k modem that never connected much above 24600 bps to myold Internet service provider. So I decided to go with StarBand. StarBand isan Internet service provider that uses a geosynchronous satellite to providea high-speed downlink as well as a fast uplink.
One Antenna, Two-Way:StarBand uses a single satellite dish antenna (24x36) for receiving AND forsending information. Plus, the StarBand antenna can accommodate both theInternet and EchoStar's Dish Network satellite TV programming. StarBandservice brings the Internet and hundreds of channels of television into myhome, all through one dish antenna.
StarBand is up to 10 times faster than dial-up can provide. With downloadspeeds up to 600 kbps, downloading a file that used to take me up to 5minutes with dial-up now takes me as little as 30 seconds!
As a StarBand subscriber I have the opportunity to be part of a uniquesatellite multicast network. In the future, I should be able to surf theInternet and receive channels of high-quality content from top entertainmentand information partners, including MP3 files, software downloads, subscription content and more.
For the last 6 years I have been a DirecTV subscriber prior to subscribing tothe Dish Network. In the early days of DBS the DirecTV pictures werestunning. Sure there were some MPEG artifacts like noisy fades and sometimessome mosquito artifacts on edges but overall quite acceptable. Once inawhile during a heavy rain Id get some MPEG blocking but that was prettyrare.
Last year I purchased a Sony Wega 24 TV set for my living room while waitingfor a decent HDTV to arrive on the scene. My preferred viewing distance fromthe Wega is approximately 8 ft. or 9 screen heights. The flat screenTrinitron display on the Wega has much more than 500 lines of horizontalresolution and a very stable DC restorer. Blacks are black with little, ifany, long term drift. I use the S video connection for all the heavyviewing and the composite video connection for other videos sources such asmy digital still camera, S-VHS machine and sometimes my camcorder. Mycamcorder also has an S video connection as well as the IEEE Fire Wire.
In the bedroom I have an old Sony 17 Trinitron monitor, the kind that manyof the off line editing bays used several years ago when doing 3/4 U-Maticediting. It has a horizontal resolution of about 300 lines.
Now let me get back on track with the subject of this article. When I madethe switch from DirecTV to Dish, I was not impressed with the quality of theimages I was seeing. They were very soft, exhibited lag, had very noisy fadesand poor resolution. These are all MPEG artifacts from not having enough bitsto do the job properly.
I have spoken with some of the engineers at both DirecTV and Dish and theyadmit that on some channels they do turn down the bit rate so as to notoverwhelm the statistical multiplexers or Muxers as they are called. This waythey say they can get more programs into the limited bandwidth available onthe satellites transponders. Pay-for-view seem to get top priority with thehigher bit rates as they usually look pretty good. Kind of like DVDs.
I have two receivers at my house. An EchoStar 6000 HDTV receiver and anEchoStar DP301 receiver. Both are DVB compliant. The artifacts Im seeing arecommon to both receivers. The interesting thing though is that the DishNetworks HDTV demo channel, #9443 and the CBS-HD feed from the east coast, onchannel #9453 look great even when viewed using the 480i output to my 24Sony Wega. The pictures are sharp and crystal clear. In the CBS case, however, the same program in SDTV on channel #243 looks very soft, has lagand poor resolution. Other network feeds such as NBC and ABC are very soft, have lag and poor resolution also.
Is this my imagination or are the pristine images that are being provided bythe various networks, to the two DBS companies, DirecTV and Dish, (nowmerging into one company per FCC approval) being degraded to VHS quality?
With the FCC in a decision last week that all DBS must carry all local TVstations will this further the degradation of the images? When a TV that hasless than 350 lines of resolution displays images with less than 200 lines ofresolution I think it is time to take a closer look at what is happening. When my camcorder images look sharper than what the networks through the DBScompanies are transmitting I can imagine what might happen on the cablecompanies when they standardize on a set-top-box and go digital. Why do we asconsumers have to watch less than VHS quality? What ever happened to truebroadcast quality? If we are to continue into the digital world with digitaltelevision then I think it is time to think about switching over to HDTVbecause even though, at this time, most people only have analog SDTV sets anHDTV picture at 480i resolution looks like studio quality SDTV as seen onstudio monitors.
Distribution of content can take many avenues. Who is going to be thewatchdog for quality control purposes? As we have seen during the 911 crisesonly a minority are receiving images OTA. The broadcaster probably doesntknow or even cares about how his signal is being degraded as it is beingdistributed to the viewing public. We would like to hear your comments onthis developing problem.
Hi - I'm trying to find the value of a Sony VO-5800PS and RM580, that I'm going to sell on ebay - any help gratefully received. Thanks Doug
I'm seeking a umatic player that will accept high-band PAL tapes, and output in NTSC, for transfer to digital archive. I assume a standard PAL player won't work, as the output is also PAL. Anyone know what machine would fill the bill, to play high-band PAL for an NTSC transfer?
Also I'm seeking a photocopy or original manual for a VO-9800.
Thanks,James
James, no such machine exists. U-matic machines were designed for professional use and what goes in is what comes out. Your only option would be to feed the signal from a PAL machine to a stahdards converter. Depending on the quality and resolution, they'll cost between a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.
If anyone is interested I have placed a BKU-703A (33pin remote interface) and a BKU-704 (timecode reader board) on ebay australia. I am selling it worldwide. These boards came out of a VO-9800 series machine, but should suit some other models.
hello
hi my latest requisition is a v05850p with a sond problem.the level meters peak on record but on playback i get no to very little sound distorted with no movement on meters.can you advise which area to start and which test points to scope. regards bill.
hi, i'm looking for working machines jvc or thomsom 6600e, cp 5550e, 6650e, cr 8200e, em 303, L 103T, pal u-matic. Thanks.
VO5850 audio : From the description of the problem, the most likely cause would be no 'bias' signal applied to the audio record heads (with the audio). The 'bias' is derived from the erase signal so if the oscillator is not running you get a) no erase of existing audio and b) low level and distorted audio from new recordings. If the erase is ok, check (with oscilloscope) that the audio record head has bias & audio (I think bias is several TENS of volts) with the audio ( a few volts) sat on top of it.

Hello.Hello.
I'm working in a project that developes archiving methods to preserve film and magnetic AV-materials (such as u-matic, B-cam, B-max, VHS, etc.) which are in great danger to be lost forever because of deteriorating and de-magnetizing. I came across a tape that has a U-matic S -logo printed on it (and hand written marking High Band on the sleeve). I can't make it play correctly on a Low-band- (shows b/W image and low audio) or High band (no video, great audio) -machine, and at this moment I have no access to a SP machine. Could anyone help me to what kind of machine to use?
Also I's like to thank the wholesome of the Palsite.com staff and contributors for making a great knowledge site!
Thanks in advance!

I have a Umatic Sony VP-2260, which I want to sell.Where can I sell it? Do you guys know anybody interested?

Can anyone help me retrieved the password of [email protected]? Someone hack my account and I can't access it anymore. Please e-mail me! Thank you!
Boy amm I surprised this list is stil going! Must be 4-5 years since I last shot any Umatic and I thought I was the last one standing!
Cought sight of the universal question about power leads......
4 Pin XLRs for 12V are almost universally wired + pin 4 - pin 1
The easy way to remember it is to picture some old duffer playing golf wearing ... "PLUS FOURS" Easy! Plus 4 - 1.....
In over 25 years in the industry that's how I've ALWAYS done it and I've not lost a piece of equipment yet! There were SOME items that used a 6v-0-6v configuration by utilising the centre pins...but we're more in film territory than video and I've NEVER seen anything wired other than the way I stated. The 4 pin DIN sockets on some equipment though is COMPLETELY different and DOES vary from item to item. Sadly I can't help in this respect.
Have fun folks!Matt
Bram actually emailed me off-list a few days ago and was I understand able to get his kit running.
>>>I'm seeking a umatic player that will accept high-band PAL tapes, and output in NTSC, for transfer to digital archive<<<<
YOu'll find that most DV bridges will accept a PAL signal. Capture as PAL then Render out as NTSC using your NLE application.

Help! I'm struggling to dub old SECAM U-Matic tapes onto PAL DVCAM. I have a VP7040 multi-format deck, and am passing the video through a SECAM-PAL converter from Vortex (http://www.vtx.co.uk/video/tvconverters.htm#p2s).
The signal looks fine on a multistandard monitor, all colour and audio there. But on the DVCAM it comes through as black and white with some weird colour bands. Going directly from the 7040 to the PAL DVCAM it comes through as plain black and white, which is what you'd expect from a SECAM signal.
Can anyone suggest what might be going wrong?

What is the best way to store 3/4" 60-min Sony Umatic videotapes? We recorded approx 200 of these between 1978-1982 and have stored them ever since in their original jackets inside metal cabinets in a temperature-controlled (a/c and heated) apartment.
Hi,
Could someone please tell me if the RM-440 would work with a pair of VP-7040s? Would I have to have BKU-701s installed in both decks?
I'm putting together an editing bay of antique gear...Amiga 4000T Toaster/Flyer, Amiga 3000T Toaster/Flyer, etc...and I have a chance to get a pair of VP-7040s at a good price. I need an edit controller for them and the RM-440 is priced right, if I can use it, that is. All advice gratefully accepted.

Some years ago i was user for a VO-5800 + VO-5850 + RM-440 with my old M3+ VO-6800 camcorder and i have very much tapes on low-band.I was read that BVU-950P can read Low-band, Hi-band, and SP, but all my low-band tapes are read in black/white. So, i don't know where is the problem. I don't have the BVU-950P user manual, i'm thinking that perhaps i must push some button or menu, but BVU-950P not like VO-5850. I try to write on a old KCA-60BRS and record/read ok with color on no SP system ?¿?¿?¿?
So, i'm looking for a user manual original, scaned or pdf.... or one solution from other users.
