Sorry just guessing really. Perhaps if you were to put the tapes in an sp recorder and record on them a little, and then play them on yr low or high band recorders for a second and see if they come out in colour or not?
This idea is based on the assumption that sp can record all formats and knows what the tape is somehow. It might only be able to play all fomats tho! ;)I seem to remember someone suggesting that there were notches on the tapes, so that the players can detect but asfaik the players just looked at the video and synced up!
I guess the big question here, is what would be the effect of using a low band tape in a high band recorder.

Freya
Hey no problem. :-D
I seem to remember reading somewhere, that one of the formats is partially compatible with another (perhaps LB to HB) but not with the thrid. (by this assumption SP)
If a LB tape worked in HB or SP equipment, you would not get HB or SP quality since those formats require the proper tape as it has a greater density of particles and probably some other features.
The 'notches' you mentioned would be just the type of thing we are looking for, do you or anyone else know anymore about this possibility?
regardsGareth :-D °o°
Thanks Rein! :)
O.K. you may be onto something there...A quick comparrison if the half doezen cassettes I have at my place shows something.
When viewed from the rear with tape at the top, the three cassettes in the 'BRS' and 'K' boxes have two holes to the left of the safety button.Perhaps this denotes LB.
Two cassettes in the 'SP' and 1 in a 'XBR' box have an additional two holes, one above and one below the safety button.
This is looking hopefull.
Even if nobody knows anything about this, all we need is for someone who has a cassette of each format to compare the holes around the safety button to confirm our suspicions.
Any takers? It would be a great help and we would be very greatfull.
RegardsGareth :-D °o°
As I understand it, All tapes will play in all players but only in black and white! So you can play high band in a low band recorder but will only get black and white pictures. If you play the same tape in a high band machine you will get the images in colour tho.
Now an SP machine should play all 3 formats in colour. If there is already video recorded on the tape this might be a way of telling, however, I have no real idea what happens if you record on a low band tape in an sp machine. From other postings on this list, I understand you need a low band machine to record low band, so my feeling is that it won't record low band on a low band tape.
What it does do I would be interested to hear! :)I'm also curious about resoloution issues, presumably an sp tape played in low band will not only be black and white but a lower resolution also.
love
Freya
Well all I know is that HB and SP use a differnt sub carrier frequency than LB.So it makes sense that an SP unit should not be able to record a LB signal that could be used in LB unit.I too would be interested to see what it does do though.
Once we get the gear delivered, I'll get my oscilliscope and waveform monitor out and have a play. ;-D
regardsGareth :-D °o°
Many VCR's are able to playback and record more than one format. For instance the VO-9800 and 9850 are able to record high-band and SP and play-back low-band high-band and SP. The BVU-950 is not able to play back low-band. The quality of high-band and SP are allmost the same. SP is slightly better than high-band. The subcarrier frequency of low-band is 685 kHz and 924 kHz for high-band and SP. The Y carrier frequency for low-band is 3.8-5.4 MHz, for high-band 4.8-6.4MHz and for SP 5.6-7.2 MHz. You already spotted the detection holes in SP series cassettes. I am not a hundred percent sure but I believe there is no difference in low-band and high-band cassettes. I hope this answers your questions about compatibility.
Thanks very much.
So now I have method of finding the SP cassettes. If there really is no difference between the LB and HB cassettes then it will be a bit tricky to sort out the BRS tape from the XBR tape.
Obviously the XBR is improved but how visually noticable would the results be if a LB cassette was used to record HB compared to a HB cassette being used?
Thanks Gareth :-D °o°
Gareth,
I don't know. I expect that you won't notice any difference. This is something I am alsointerested in. If I can find the time I will check this out.
Well...this is my simple problem...I have a jvc vhs player with a multibrand remote control, does anyone know how to set this to control a panasonic tv?
This whole LB-HB-SP thing is making me confused too.
I have a pile of 164 cassettes that I'm trying to identify!Well at leased I can pick out the SP cassettes now, just need to find a way to spot the 'BRS' and 'XBR' tapes.
Also Has anyone seen/used/heard of "SONY KCA(s)-xxK" e.g. KCS-30K U-Matic tape?
I have several of these but I can't find anything about them on the web. They have a yellow band on the case label. If it helps to give a time frame the other other casssttes are colour coded:Orange band=KSP, Copper band=XBR, Green band=BRS.
And while I'm here I'll ask my other question again.Does anyone have schematics for focus and zoom remote lense controllers?I have a fujinon VCL-1012BY, with the standard 8 pin and 3 pin connectors.Failing that does anyone have pinouts at leased for these connectors?
Thanks very much.
Gareth :-D °o°
Nick, I may be over-ruled on this, but as far as I am aware (regarding composite systems at anyrate) there is no such thing as Hiband NTSC. This will explain why the tapes recorded on NTSC VO machines will playback on NTSC BVU machines and vice-versa. In Europe the situation is not quite so simple and just to add to the confusion we have Secam high and low band also.
I have 2 U-Matic vo-5850p One of them is in good working order. The other One of them the Mechanism is damaged but could be repaired. They are both currently on ebay for open bids starting at a reserve price of£100.00 Dont realy know much about these machines i would like to know more just out of interest.

Wow!Quite a huge amount of information compiled here! Here goes-I am faced w/the integration of a legacy VO5800 into a new city gov't system here in CA (US). I would like to use the Y/C-688 dub output of the machine, but need to convert it to Y/C-3.58 (US) so it will play nice w/the S-video input on the TBC. Anyone know of a commercially available converter? NTSC or PAL (he asked, praying that the company would make both flavors)? Thanks in advance!
Hello all.
I've been given a Sony V0-5630 new old stock machine, was a spare, and never used, powers up, but i have nothing to try in it! Sony in australia have since stopped selling U-matic tapes. Everyone here is going/gone over to Betacam. Anyone know where i can get some new tapes for this beast? Either here or via mail order... Thanks.
Aussie Dave,
Try this place. http://www.bhphotovideo.com
They sometimes have to special order some tapes but are reliable. I use them for my production work.
Nick, I don't know much about the NTSC models. What I know is what I read on this forum and in the Service manuals.
I am looking for a users manual/instruction guide for the Sennheiser md 421 microphone. Can anyone help me??René - Netherlands
I am looking for a small supply of 14-pin male and female chassis connectors - the type that will mate to the 14-pin to 14-pin cables for Sony cameras. Any help appreciated.

Hi everybody,
Someone could help me and tell me tne best way to access the reel table on the VO 5800. I would like to put some oil in it cause the noise.
Thank you.
Some of the Umatic machines have balanced XLR's.Do any of them provide phantom power? (48v)
Rein, same here on PAL.
I like learning new things. I'm very interested in how the three formats (NTSC-PAL-Secam)differ. Most people in the U.S aren't very knowledgable about PAL and Secam, especially when it comes to the 3/4" format. That's probably why I am here!
Maybe we should all discuss the differences??
Fabien, I had the same problem. Annoing isn't it??
Roland Pickett posted a mesaage on the top of this forum explaining how it can be done.
If for any chance it gets deleted this is what he said.
Roland Pickett said:"You can remove each reel table by undoing the single screw at the top of each one,be careful not to damage the brake bands, use a smidgeon (is that word in the dictionary?) of light oil on the spindles, and replace the reel tables and try again. Alternatively there are new reel tables in stock at http://www.umatic.icom43.net."
Freya, I don't think there is a U-Matic with phantom power on the XLR connectors.
Probably you are right Rein!
It might have been useful on the portable recorders but I guess you can use a mixer in a studio anyway. Just wondered.

WANTED: BKU-905 timecode card for BVU-900/920/950P series umatic vtr.
Everyone.
Though this is not related to U-Matics I have to mention this as it's important.
My mate Doug in Victoria Australia whom has a collection of vintage video equipment is getting rid of three 2 inch Quad VTRs as he needs space for some LMS machines. As there's virtually no marketing in 2 inch VTRs he's going to get them destroyed for scrap metal unless someone is willing to take them off his hands. The 2 inch VTRs are: RCA TR-61, RCA TR-70 and an Ampex AVR-2 all in PAL format. These are very few remaining 2 inch quad VTRs left in Australia.
Anyhow I was wondering if anyone here is interested in these VTRs or know of anyone who is interested in them? If so then here's Doug's email address for you's to contact [email protected] . Also contact me too at [email protected] or [email protected] . I'll be asking around on various message boards and groups and emailing various video companies to see if I can find anyone who's interested as well as I desperately want to see these VTRs go to a good home instead of being bulldozed and used as scrap metal.
Lastly a few things to mention, the suitable environment for these machines would be a room with a tiled or carpeted floor and air conditioning is preferrable too especially in hot weather conditions. Also Doug uses 60 psi of absolute dry compressed air when operating these VTRs.

I have 3/4inch editing since the 1980's when I working for MGM/UA advertising and publicity dept. That's were I started in 3/4. I have almost retired my BVU200B and two VO2860A with modified address trks. Now I purchased a used BVU850SP and also a VO9800 and will now use my Covergence ECS104 and a ECS85. I have one big problem, the timer counter on the front panel of BVU850 will not count control track unless the switch is set to "Local" and not to remote. Of course, if I can't use the remote setting for my editor I can't make any edits - EDL is not listing any numbers. If I hit reset nothing happens while in the "remote" position. If I switch to "Local" the panel counter will start moving and I can "zero" set. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Hi U-matic fans,
Here you want to visit the videorecorder U-matic: http://bidouille.dyndns.org/~bruno/U_matic.htm

Ok.Sergio
I am at Stanford U. and they have in the Special Collections 60 hours of Avant-Guarde modern dance from Japan (butoh) from the late 60's and 70's. Its on Umatic. (if there are various kinds, then I don't know which kind since I don't know much about umatic.) Unfortunately, Stanford doesn't have a machine and wants to charge me 300 dollars a tape to transfer the stuff over to VHS. So I am looking for other options, and one I considered is buying a machine myself and donating it to them so they would let me look at the stuff. Alternatively, maybe I could buy a machine and donate it to them so that they could do the VHS transfer in-house. So my two questions: What do umatic machines cost? (I noticed several postings on this page asking people to make offers, but i haven't any idea what to offer.) And is it easy or quite difficult to use a machine either for play-back or for transfering data to a VHS machine?
Best,
Bruce

Hi all! I recently bought a great Umatic player; the VP-5040 with full System Select (NTSC/PAL/SECAM).... it's working great BUT I want to be sure I keep it running well.
Does anyone out there have a SERVICE MANUAL and/or an OPERATING MANUAL to share or sell? I've not had much luck here in the US finding a vendor of these; even Sony doesn't list this model... must have been an imported deck.
Please let em know if you have a manual for it -or- know where I should look! Thanks,

I have a problem with a BVU 800 and wonder if anyone knows where I can obtain a manual for these machines.
The reason for the request is that the tape puller, on the BVU 800, has started to stop its travel before it starts to operate the ring which takes the tape around the video drum. However sometimes the ring is operated but does not complete its cycle. The result is that the machine cannot be used at the moment although everything apart form that still appears to be OK.
Thanks for any assistance or suggestions anyone feels able to give.
Have received a 60 minute tape for my vo-5630 to try it out.
works well. but, apon recording a few things to try it out, ive got occasional white specs flying across the screen, and recording off a low quality source, i have ghosting to the left hand of any bright colours on blacks.
From high quality source its not there, however, in some colours there are waves, just like when a tv is very slightly not tuned into a channel correctly. very strange considering im using AV leads all the way.
does it sound like all the caps have dried out and need replacing ?
Well, i just found out what the tracking knob is for. Der! (im a newbie)
now playback of a Recorded DVD yeilds a picture so clear that most would assume it's comming straight from the DVD player!
Very, Very happy!I'll no longer be collecting betamax equipment, I'm now a U-matic convert.

I used to work on UMatics. In my spare time I edited my family's collection of cine films onto three UMatic masters. It was a real labour of love but the masters looked great. I have a VHS copy to watch but I would dearly love to copy the Masters onto digital.I am looking for some kind soul (or hard-nosed business) in the London/Essex area with a UMatic player who could put the masters on miniDV (or I could bring my camcorder round to hook up to record them).Of course, I'm happy to pay for the priviledge.RegardsSteve Cox

Hello..I'm looking for the service manual ( with schematics) for the Sony portable U-Matic recorder VO6800 or some help to put it back to work. it is turning on ok, but the control panel doesn't work ( none of the comands and none of the warning led's). when I turn the power off then on again with a tape inside, it will start making a series of loud "clacks" and pull the tape around the video head, stopping a while after with the tape nearly loaded as if it was going to run, then nothing else hapens. video head spins fast when this happens and the capstan motor also runs but everything stops at the same time. sometimes it will return the tape back toth e case and eject. sometimes not. there is also a loud signal ( continuous tone) on the earphones and audio outs.sorry for the long post. I'm out of resources with this one and not willing to scrap the machine. any help is welcome. thank you
Hello everyone.I'm new in U-Matic stuff by just getting a BVU950P. It's a great machine especially when it plays SP tapes. This works fine so far. Now I had to playback some older Standard U-Matic tapes. They all come without colors. I've tested the playback on an VO-5630. Everything is OK and with color. Only playback via BVU950P ist black/white. Can somebody tell me what's wrong. As far as I know BVU950 does play SP and Standard Tapes. All tapes and machines are PAL.
Walter, It sounds to me like your BVU-950 does not play Low Band tapes. That would explain the loss of colour.I'm not 100% sure, but I do seem to remember reading that the 950 is only HB and SP compliant.
You can double check this by looking for the model in the equipment page of this site, it should give that information in the spec.

Hi. Can anyone help me please?I have a VO-9800 which is playing up.When I recieved it, it had a tape stuck in it. I removed the tape following the guidlines in the service manual, and the player started working as expected. I was able to insert the tape, play it no problem, shuttle back and forward, jog works no problem, however once I hit stop the damn thing freezes and gives me "Error 02". According to the service manual this is a tape slack error, the tape certainly isn't slack. Could it be too much tape tension? Has anyone had this problem befor? Basically I wanted to ask befor I go nosing blindly through the service manual in case someone could say..."Oh yes I had that problem, do this..this...and that...to fix it."
Thanks in advance.
Gareth :-D °o°the tape certainly isn't slack

Check to make sure the Record Protection is in place on the recording tape. It is a little round red or orange button on the bottom of the tape. Without this protection the machine won't record. If it is lost, replace with some sticky tape over the hole.
Also, I have for sale a complete set of service manuals for Sony VO-5630. It is brand new, I bought it when I had several of these machines but never needed it. Make an offer, but delete all numbers out of my email address before you send the message.

Hi,u-matic fans,is a130$ a lot to pay for a VO-5630 IN WORKING ORDER?
Hi, I have a JVC 6650E U-Matic top loader for sale. I can email a frame grab from it and also an SVHS which I did as a test, I think the U-matic is better. I live 20 miles north Manchester, postage is not an option. Any reasonable/silly offer accepted, or it's skip time.
Hi-can anyone tell me the difference between the Sony VP and VOseries decks? Specifically, the VP-9000 versus the VO-9850. Thisis going to be used strictly for playback- is there any real noticeablepicture quality difference between these two decks? I'm bidding soonso I'd appreciate any info as soon as possible. Thanks,Marc
Hi all. I'm soon getting a 1970s Sony VO-2630 toploader, just need to know what year did these models came out?
I took a look thru the older messages on this chat page and though many people asked about manuals, there didn't seem to be any answer about where to find them! I just picked up a U-Matic VO-5600 and was able to record and playback on it, but I have a few operational questions that would be answered in the manual. Is there anywhere to download or order a copy of the VO-5600 manual (in the US at least)? Would someone be willing to send me a photocopy? Any pointers in the right direction would be real helpful! I'm pretty amazed at the quality I'm getting on recording and playback!
Thanks,
James
