Hello all,

The American Social History Project is looking to backup all their old U - Matic tapes (which are like huge VHS tapes) onto DV's. We were using a old sony 5850 u - matic which has recently, died. We need a new one!

We would really appreciate it if someone could donate one for the continued production to help create educational media for the schools of NYC. It is a tax deductable donation to boot!

We all appreciate the help. Thank you, Thomas

I am Muthu Vijaiyan, a film director and educator from India started a small scale film academy, Artistry Film Academy.

As our funds are so limited and does not permits developing a book library / equipment for our students and faculty, I was forced in a situation to find donors/sponsorers to help and open the minds of our boys into film making technology.

It will be more helpful if you can support us providing with old used books / surplus books/magazines dealing with Film studies and any equipment which may not serve your purpose.

I'm trying to find any and all information on 3M/Scotch u-matic MBR 20S with the lot # 620030583826. Hi all. Umatic is the format that Planet TV started out with in 1981. First a pair of VO2860 top loading edit machines and a VO3800 portable with separate (heavy) powerpack. We progressed to a 4800 portable and a pair of VO5850 edit decks and RM440 edit controller, before moving up to Umatic SP, which used metal tape and gave MUCH better pics. We still have quite a few old Umatic decks here which are very occasionally pressed into service. If anyone needs help dubbing to/from Low-band, BVU High-Band or High-band SP, we may be able to help you out. A U.K company called APR Video (01823 251831) still sell tapes for both low and high-band. Regards, Patrick Kirby. http://www.planet-television.com

Hi, Umatic users! Here's the news. Steam engines are dead. There are some lovely little exhibition railways chuffing about in seaside resorts just to show the kiddies what it was like when Grandpa was still a virgin, but that's it. There are no more commercial steam engines in use, the technology is old, dead, discarded. Want to see a steam engine ? Visit a museum. Folks, it's the same with Umatic, and thesooner you get it into your head the better. I just costed a 12 minute short and shooting, color balancing, duping etc on Umatic would have added £ 8000 to the budget! What the hell for? Mini-DV gives you a better picture and it's much easier to use - no cables or recorders to piss about with. DVCAM is even better but costs a bit more, but much less than Umatic! Why use obsolete technology that is not only outdated but massively inferior to cheaper technology which is far easier to get your hands on? Try getting a Umatic recorder repaired, or even serviced! Can't be done - not at a reasobale price, anyway. Meh. Do what you like. Umatic is crap, and it's dead and buried crap, too. Live with it.

In response to SYLVIA, although I doubt she will ever read it, most likely too busy rebooting the computer after it crashed again in the middle of an edit.First of all you are wrong about the commercial use of steam engines. You'll find that still many of them are in daily use in Asian, African, South-American and Eastern European countries, but I assume you would never have visited a country that didn't screen MTV 24 hours a day. And why do they still use them? Because they work and where made to last. In regards to U-matic, the point you so obviously missed is that there are people who enjoy using 'old' technology. For fun, not everything in life is related to money. And in regards to 'obsolete' technology, a example that you may be able to comprehend, why do you think so many international DJ's still use vinyl records instead of CD's? Because it sounds better than digital recordings. And I haven't even started about the commercial broadcasters that still use u-matic. 'Old' technology isn't dead, deal with it!

And now back to business: I use VO-9850 and VO-9800 for editing. I recently found a batch of brand new Sony SP tapes which I thought would be superior in quality, but they are giving me a lot of grief, they often get tangled or stick to the capstan. What experiences have other people had and what tape do you recommend for editing?

Could be an interesting discussion!

Roderick, did you get those tapes in a cardboard box out of the basement? if so, they probably hare humid or something. I find remarkably little problems with Fuji tape. Either digital, S-VHS or U-matic, it seems like the tapes are well made. At least for me. As for Sylvia, I guess she requested a 35mm to U-Matic dub or something? 8000 quid? :)

Eric, thanks for your response. Humidity may well play part in this, I live in Sydney and humidity levels are between 60% and 80% at the moment. But I do have less problems with Sony XBR or BRS tapes. I'll see if I can find some Fuji tapes and compare. Or have a look at installing Air Conditioning, something I don't really want to do.

Hi Roderick, well, what I actually tried to say is that if you found a batch of unknown source, you'd best seperate the tapes and the sleeves/boxes/whatever, and just leave them for a year in an open box in your living room under a table or something. Forward/rewind them after a couple of months, might try in getting rid of stickyness. By the time you use them, the warmth of the machine should be enough to keep any damp remains out for a while. This sounds like obvious advise, but hey, just try to think it's meant positively :)

Hello! I am an stop motion animator that are looking for a machine that I can use as a animation monitor, that are less expensive and complicated than the perception video cards. I've seen a U-matic recorder availiable on ebay and I wonder if you could help me with some questions about the machine.

I used a umatic recorder as a monitor on an earlier animation project, It had a videocamera attached and a tv as a monitor, so I captured the animation both on the umatic recorder and the same frames on 16mm film.

It was perfect way to keep track of my animating, as the umatic recorder was showing the 10 last frames for every new frame I captured. It gave me a really good feeling the moves of the characters. Would I be able to do the same with this umatic recorder? Now I use dv video and after effects its so much hassle going through the software and rendering before I even get a glimpse of the moves I've animated.....It's less organic.................... What sort of video camera would I use to capture images into the umatic recorder? Could I use a modern digital camcorder and could I use a normal tv as a monitor? What sort of cables would I have to buy? Could I capture frames on my digital camera and at the same time use it as a monitor camera for the umatic recorder and the TV?But the most important thing for me to know is if I can use a umatic recorder as a monitor for animation: so instantly be able watch the single frames play simutaniously as a film.I hope anyone can help!Yours sincerely Molly Silk

Hey Molly, attaching a video camera and a TV monitor to a U-Matic isn't that hard. Just try and find two RCA-to-BNC convertor plugs (the digital camera on video-in, and the TV on video-out). I think you're best off finding a recorder that has standby (the video heads stop rotating) because it's a waste to leave them wearing themselves out when there's no need for it :)

I've just acquired a BVO -950 and I have a umatic master I'd like to view on it, but when I do, it seems the machine is not picking up on the control track. I think the tape was recorded in non-SP umatic. Does that make a difference? I also do not have the TBC board on my BVO -950 and do not have an external TBC source. Does that make the difference?

To Sylvia. The problem with your analogy is that if a steam engine - I'm assuming you mean reciprocating engines because steam turbines are still in widespread use - is no longer needed for a task it doesn't leave anything behind but maybe a shadow on the floor.

Millions of U-matic tapes are out there and they still have to be played on something even if nobody ever opts to hit the RECORD switch again.

Steam engines are dead? That must be news to the folks downtown at the General Electric steam turbine division. Maybe in factories the steam engine has been replaced by electric motors but those little motors would be useless without the whirring steam engine down at the nuclear power plant.

Oddly enough even though there aren't so many steam reciprocating engines left, that technology hasn't gone to waste as giant reciprocating diesel engines now power a growing number of ships and the like.

Even the most modern digital VTR still has a little U-matic technology somewhere within it. Anyway a lot of commercial firms still like using U-matic. I know our local CBS station still archives it's news pieces to U-matic when they're done showing them.

Hi all - Someone seems to have caused an awful lot of fuss over nothing. For the record I work for a production company with bases in Norwich and London W1, naturally we've got every piece of digital kit a client could request... and we've also got VO9850/9800 BVU-SP decks at both sites. In London visiting advertising agencies use them daily for voice-to-picture sessions and in Norwich I tape DX-ed satellite feeds to them as I can trigger them recording in the VT bay from the desktop of my PC. Added benefit is they'll auto-edit to stripe timecode in sync with the timeline, not only that but I can relay the timecode from a Digibeta deck onto them for frame-accurate viewing copies. When they finally give up working (but no signs of impending failure just yet) our Betacam SP machines will take their place - so analogue ain't dead just yet.

A U-matic portable utilises a 14 pin camera socket although I don't know what plug the RCA camera uses. In any event if you have a PSU for the camera and it also has a composite out connector then you can input the signal into the U-matic recorder via the composite bnc "video in" connector and feed the mic input into the "audio in" XLR connector. BTW don't tell Sylvia any of this....

Although, It will be interesting to show the young folks what was the standard at the time...It sould be really interesting to use it to shoot some interviews of pioneers on... now all we need is a sony camera of similar vintage to pair up with it. when I saw it for sale I did not realize what it was but this site was wonderful, there were all the details that pushed me into getting it!

Was reading previous comments... yes, the new digital cameras have a weight advantage... but... I think this will be interesting!

Yes there are two sizes of U-matic tape, as with the Betacam system. Your machine, being a portable, only takes the small size - usually called U-matic-S (not to be confused with U-matic SP of course) although to confuse the issue Sony made short-duration tapes in both small and large cassette shells! These are still readily available new, just make sure you order 'portable' or 'camera' tapes - as the duration doesn't always give it away. Remember though that the longest small-size cassettes are 20 minutes, anything longer will definitely be a large-size one.

Re.:AUDIO RECORD PROBLEMS VO-5... /audio is not recorded or not erased/ The defect may be caused due internal failure of bias/erase oscilator module too. As well as poor contact in relay it may also occur only intermittently . This module is silver metal box on AU board, marked CP501 (CP-502), SONY part number 1-464-139-00. Resoldering of pins of this module can sometimes help. Push slightly pins toward the module when resolder. Details for checking: pin1 +12V (only in REC or AUDIO INS mode), pin2 and 4 GND, pin3 in active state switched to GND by transistor, pin 5 output 71kHz (guess 200Vpp), pin6 not connected (tapping of secondary winding). I've got yet another U-Matic question. I've asked tons, i know, but how do you edit with U-Matic, do you need the Sony RM440 as the be all & end all of it?, or is there some other way, as it's much simpler with VHS as a example, a 20 quid Vivanco box and you're away!, i dont know the U-Matic options for this except the RM440. Plus does anyone know how you connect a Commodore Amiga Genlock to a U-Matic, if at all possible, as i suspect they are designed for home video use. If any of you chaps can help with answers, i'm always grateful. I've been trying to get my head round what best system to buy, either U-Matic, or a semi-pro VHS setup with quality gear & industrial VHS machines. It's been a real struggle with so many pros and cons, and all the questions will decide my final actions!.

Thanks Woody cu UMatic is Rubbish!

Hi Woody,

It all depends on the machines you are using. For a VO-5850 /5800 combo a RM-440 is the way to go, you pick them up at eBay for a few quid. With BVU-800 you can actually link two machine with a 9-pin cable and use one as a master and the other as a slave. VO-98**, you'll need either a RM-450 (which has both 34-pin & 9-pin control) to use the 9-pin remote connection on your machines. I wouldn't waste money on cheap gadgets designed for domestic VCR's, they are not likely to work at all with professional equipment. Can't help you with the Amiga Gen-lock, that's steam engine stuff ;-P

Woody - assuming the Amiga genlock is a Rendale or similar, ideally you need a TBC to stabilise the output of the U-matic before you feed it into the "CVBS in" port on the genlock. It is possible to feed the output from the U-matic straight into this port but you will end up with a wobbly picture. You need a CEL P147 -30 or similar TBC which generates its own reference signal. The Sony BVT TBC's need a burst signal to lock them up. All of this complicated jargon is fuelling Sylvia's argument about digital kit of course, which allows completely un-educated and inexperienced persons to produce and edit their own films.

I have a Umatic VP-9600 by Sony any ideas on where I can sell it besides ebay? How can I tell how many hours are on it?

Dear U-matic group,

I'm a scientist, and was given a large pile of u-matic casettes which contain video documentaries of great historical interest, which I want to transfer to DVD format for longer-term preservation. They are PAL format, on the following casette types:

Ampex 197 BCS-20Ampex 197 BCA-603-M UCA 20S3-M UCA 30

I have a good Mac system to record the DVDs, but am totally ignorant of u-matic recorders and players. I looked at e-bay and they have some apparently-incredible deals, but before buying anything, I figure to firstly answer these questions, and so ask for your help:

1. What would be the top-line and best-recommended u-matic recorder-player for my task -- basically to play the u-matic tapes for transfer to DVD.

2. I note, Sony's last made model was the VO-9850, which as I understand it, the VO-9850P is the one for PAL videos, though I need something which will work on USA power line current.

3. Is it "overkill" to try and get that top-line player? I don't know which u-matic tape variety I have, but figured, the higher end units made last would play all the different types.

Feedback? Suggestions?

Anyone who could donate equipment, I could give a tax-deduction letter from our non-profit foundation.

thanks much,

James,A few things for you to consider.Transfers from tape to DVD may seem a fairly easy proces, but to do it properly requires a bit more than a VCR and a computer. First of all you mention that the tapes are PAL and, since you are in the USA, your set-up it most likely to be NTSC so you would need a standards converter. It would also be advisable to run the signal through a Time Base Corrector to ensure that the conversion is stable.Depending on the historical value and the number of tapes, I would advise you to have this conversion done professionally rather than attempting it yourself. But if you want to do it yourself, a VO-9850 would probably be your best choice, they do appear on eBay regularly, just check the voltage and PAL capabilities. If you want to email me for further assistance, just remove all numbers from the address.

Dear Roderick,

Thanks for your feedback. I'm having to learn this kind of transfer for my Hi-8 tapes, and have so much other stuff to preserve, and no money to pay others, that I'm slowly assembling the necessary equipment. There must be nearly 100 u-matic casettes here needing this conversion and preservation.

I've looked at the VO-9850 and it seems best, and there are a lot of them up for sale on ebay in the USA, often for around $ 200 or so, but... as I understand, the one for PAL is the EVO-9850-P which I cannot find. Not sure if the standard 9850 will do PAL or not, but am trying to get clear answers locally. Also, I see the VO-9800 seems very good, quite similar, but I have the same PAL-related questions about it. Since this group specializes in PAL tapes, can you advise what are the model numbers you use, with the letter prefixes and suffixes?

I've also seen the model VP-9000, but no idea how that would be different, the VO versus VP. Is there a specific model number for these Sony umatic recorders which will play all the different umatic types - high band, low band, SP, etc.? Would be a bad deal if my tapes were the highest band, but I purchased a recorder-player unable to read them. That's why I suppose getting the 9800 or 9850 is best.

If you or others on this list know a website or have a brochure I could purchase a copy of that spells out all these different model numbers and what they mean, that would be a giant help. Sony has nothing about u-matic remaining on their pages, so far as I can tell.

My Mac Final Cut Express is PAL-signal capable, as is the digital converter, so with some care that should be possible.

Thanks for your assist.

James

Stumbled upon this wonderful site via Google - Hello, everyone.

Cleaning out our modest video studio I have found a flight-cased Hitachi FP-Z31 camera with psu, etc and upgraded broadcast quality Fujinon Pegasus II lens. Anybody have the slightest idea what this might be worth? Anyone want to buy it? Comes with full manuals and spare circuit boards.

I have found some old High/Standard Density half inch and 1 inch Sony tapes with edited images of a school I used to work at in 1978. All recorded on the portapak and one copied to the CV2100 inch format tapes. I would like these copied to DVD or MPEG, as there is significant historical/personal value on them. I could also offer copies on the Friends Reunited Priory Park School web pages. Does anyone know a company that can copy the tapes to digital format?

Thanks, Terry

Nicola di saluti e Pasqua Felice. Lei non ha bisogno di usare il connettore speciale. Lei può usare un cavo col connettore di bnc ed anche un altro per la sincronia avanzata.

Hi Terry,

As a 1970's and into the 80's owner myself of the Sony CV2100 and its tapes, I can say your main problem will be getting the tapes to now play!

They may well suffer stiction, which basically means that the lubrication in the tape has gone over time and now the tape sticks to the head drum assembly and will not move.

You may be lucky and get them to play in short bursts if you heat them VERY carefully for around 15 minutes in a household oven - but keep the temperature well down - under 50c or you may heat them up too much and erase them too!

I had my original 70's machine until the late 90's, but never could get a tape to play - the latest loan of a machine was not good either as its capacitors had dried up and it went bang with a nasty lingering smell after! - but, it is fixable.....

Good luck!

I was watching a TV programme last week which showed the making of the video "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day. They band were filmed whilst walking on a moving treadmill in front of a large screen onto which they projected a 16mm cine film which had been "aged" by the producer using scratches and burns etc. to make the footage appear "old". The producer, presumably, was paid handsomely for his work. Why didn't you get this job, Sylvia? Your equipment is much more up to date.

Hiya - I have been using my U-matic for that sort of thing quite a bit recently, as a mental break from my 'paid for' work I do various video art projects which frequently call for the 'grungy' look I recently did a piece in the style of a 1960's inflight safety film, I used Discreet Combustion for the graphics then passed the render through FilmFX to get the look of faded 16mm reversal, but it just didn't look tatty enough - so I bounced it down through three generations of U-matic and then over-corrected it with an old Merlyn-X timebase corrector before making a Digibeta master. I still have an analogue satellite receiver to get various types of video noise, digital stuff just gives me a blue-screen when there's no signal.

No matter how obsolete it is someone always has a use for it... like top recording studios paying thousands of pounds for genuine 1960s valve kit rather than a few quid on a plug-in that can 'emulate' the sound.

I'm here in the states and have a question or two about u-matic s conversion to the dvd format.First, people here are fairly ignorant about anything that is older than last week, so I hope you good people across the pond are a help. Since losing my wife to cancer several years ago, I've been unable to locate a reputable/quality u-matic s to dvd transfer service here in the west/southwestern US. Would anyone on this board have a suggestion? The tape I want to convert was one my dear Ella and friends put together - a homegrown movie short if you will. Thanks for your ideas in advance. Dear Forum!

I bought a very cheap BV-800P. When I try to record the "Auto Off" light lights up for short time and the machine stops.

Sometimes, the cassette is loaded, but the tape gets not winded arround the head.

What kind of signal should be feeded to the "external sync" connector? Is black burst ok?

Unfortunately I havn't a user manual...

Thank you in advance

Both should be cheap enough if you can get hold of them.I couldn't work out whether you are in the U.S.A or wherever. If you are in NTSC format the BVU 800 should be able to play the tapes. Howde everyone! I've just put an item up for sale that you may find of interest, it is a Sony BVR -800 VTR remote control, basically a clone of a U-matic front panel but can be connected to the machine via the RS422 9-pin socket (Series 9 BVU-SP recorders) but it works with a whole load of other VTRs with 9-pin machine control. If you'd like a look go to ebay.co.uk and enter item number: 7511663761.

Hi everyone. I just picked up a VO-5600 on Ebay and it seemed to work great, at first. After sitting wit the power on all day however, it is acting up. I suspect a problem caused by heat, and am letting it cool off now. The behavior is that during (or while initiating) playback the machine won't come out of pause. Or if I can finally get it to play it will play for a couple minutes, then jump into pause and stick there (play or pause do not cause the tape to roll at this point). Sometimes when I just turn it on, no tape, the pause light is lit. Anybody have any clue what this behavior could mean?

Been using the deck this morning for over two hours without a problem. It's definitely a heat issue, although it didn't FEEL really hot last night. The vcr is missing its little rubber feet, it was rack mounted before apparently. I have it sitting flat on a cardboard box, but the box is smaller than the base of the machine. I have been very careful not to cover any vent holes. Perhaps the box is acting as a heat sink though, and heating up the machine slowly. This is what I think the problem is, and it may be fixed when I find a set of feet to put on it.

HELP!!!! I am about to start onlining a doc. Film and the film has been archived on 3/4 SP PAL. I need to either buy a deck for really cheap (I have engineers that can work on it, maintain) OR, find one someone would be willing to rent/loan for a reasonable price... I am in San Francisco, CA. I have over 60 hours/60 tapes of this footage to go through and most of the $$ will end up paying for my system to be able to work with this deck and footage. I would be willing to discuss "in-kind" donation or may be able to get it set up as a 501 Tax deduct. donation. I will even discuss work for trade.
