John, your U-Matic portable probably isn't worth much. But if you're into a video hobby, they make a refreshing view on the world. Is there a type somewhere listed? Popular Sony types are VO-4800, VO-6800 and VO-8800.

Does anyone know the significance of suffix letters "PS" in Sony models numbers? I'm trying to find out whether a VO-5800PS is the same as a Vo-5800 or does some things differently.I'd be very grateful for any info.

Chris: Any full size U-matic will play the tapes but they probably won't fit any portable recorder. The problem is that it all depends on whether they are recorded low-band or hi-band on which machine you can edit them. To be safe, try to find a VO-9800 or 9850, they play both formats.

Nick: At a guess - a VO-5800 is normally a NTSC machine, a VO-5800P is the PAL version and I can only assume that a VO-5800PS would accept PAL and Secam tapes, but it is only a guess. It appears you are in the UK and probably want a PAL or PAL/Secam machine. NTSC is the USA and Japanese standard.

Loes,

I understand the Videonics controller uses LANC control. LANC is not used on U-Matic.

Setting up a lineair A/B roll editing studio is complicated! That is, if you want to edit frame accurate. (This is imperative for A/B roll editing). You need two time base correctors for the players (some U-matics have build in TBC's), you need an 8 field edit controller and you need a video mixer. Everything has to be set and aligned using oscilloscope and vectorscope(colour framing, horizontal sync. phase, colour subcarrier phase). If your video mixer has build in TBC's it is a little bit less complicated. For example the Panasonic WJ-MX10 and WJ-MX12. But I stopped using the WJ-MX12 because the picture quality was degrading to much.

Setting up a non lineair studio is a lot less complicated and you save lots on your power bill and space. (If you don't mind the occasional computer lock-up). But despite all that I stil prefer using my three U-Matics for editing. We all have our idiosyncrasy. So, if you still want to go ahead, I can give you some tips and hints.

Rein

May be a bit off-topic, but I've picked up an AC -F1. That's a Sony NP1 charger/power adapter for a portable betamax. I wanted to use it as a backup charger actually. If I insert a battery pack and hit 'charge', the unit almost fries the pack. When it comes out it's really really hot. Is that normal? The pack isn't that old. Thanks for any thought, Eric

I own a VO5630. I would really like to use it as a fireplace or aquarium at parties. (or psychedelic music videos - chill-out zone). Can anybody mail me how I can record on this machine? What kind of cable do I need, for example to record from a DVD player or normal Video Recorder (VHS), or better even to go from DVI/Monitor out (computer) to VO5630. I think the side on the VO5630 is BNC, but are there cables that do this conversion??? Please mail me. Moon

Howdy troops. Stupid beginner question: I've just got a VO-5630 and need help connecting it all up! How do I connect from the 8-pin tv output to a regular TV (via an scart)? And what do i do with the connections to send (to a pc capture card) and receive (from the card's s-video output) onto the umat? Do I just need adaptor cables from the BNC ins & outs to s-video/composite video or is it much more complex than that? Sorry for the newbieishness :)

Hi All.

I've recently bought a second hand VO-7630 to replace my ageing 2630. Player is virtually unused although has a couple of problems. Rewind is very noisy although visual search forward and backwards is fine. The PAL/SECAM system swith is reversed so in PAL it is actually SECAM and vice versa (NTSC is as it should be) and the colour lock switch on the back has 'popped'. Repaired switch but could do with some advice on the rewind noise. Suspect it has been serviced and a connector put back incorrectly which would explain the PAL/SECAM business. I can live with the latter but not the rewind noise.

Anyone out there with advice or service manual that can help. I can recommend the (UK) place I got this from. They have two VP5040 's, a VP7040 and a 5600P (I think) still for sale. The machines don't seem to have had very much use and the 7630 I bought has no signs of any head wear except the usual evidence on the audio assembly.

My very best regards,

Ron

Is it possible to use tape from D1 cassette in U-matic machine? As far as I know the tape speed is higher in D1 machine (28.69 cm/s instead of 9.53 cm/s) and therefore I consider that tape won't be damaged. Maybe the D1 machine mechanism is more delicate than the one of U-matic? Aivars Migla - from LatviaTo answer me directly please remove excess 'dot.' from my e-mail address.

I am owner & operator of a production studio in the Northwestern Indiana area in the United States.

I have produced programming, television shows and more. I have used VHS editors (BR-8600U),great machine but lacking in quality video. I then started using a Panasonic S-VHS system, great system, but many trips to the repair shop. S-VHS lacks in ruggedness, and video signal strength is not as strong. I use U-Matic 5850's and get rugged machine, very good rock solid video and audio. In fact in our area 90% of the local cable television channels still use 3/4". I hope they keep making U-matic blank tapes, and parts if you need them. I wish Sony would come back out with 3/4" video it is the best!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello from New Zealand, I'm part of a community focused church who are starting to get into video taping our sunday services, at the mo its just for critiquing reasons, but as we get more skilled its planned to be used for those that cant make it to church for various reasons ie ill health or geographical reasons.

Why I am writing this is because we are current loaning gear from various sources, as you could imagine it is time consuming and a hassel chasing it down every week. We are currently investigating our options 2nd hand versus new etc, our budget is limited to say the least. Therefore I was wondering if any of you had surplus video gear you would consider donating or selling cheap to get us started.

Hi,

I am having a problem with a new PCI Parallel Port we've installed. We're a Football Club and are selling tickets along with memberships. We have a ticket printer and a membership card printer, both of which MUST be connected by Parallel Ports directly with the Computer. We have installed a new port, Q-Tec, 110P 1 Port Parallel PCI Card, for LPT2.

The problem we are having is which ever printer is plugged into the LPT2 port is not working. The Computer is registering the new Port and on the computer all properties are correct and the port seems fine and to be working. But it simply will not print.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks. This is really getting desperate and urgent.

Hi all. I recently got a Sony VO-2630 Umatic from a mate in Sydney, it works, plays, records and produces a really nice picture. The only downer is that on the video outputs (both BNC and TV) I'm getting intermittent horizontal hairthin noise streaks in the picture. I don'tknow what's causing that problem, might be some sort of interference or something. I know it's not the videotapes as I've ran a live feed from my pay TV decoder box to the machine and outputted to VHS and still getting noise.

I only hope it's not a circuitry fault which requires painstake fault finding and ripping half the guts out of the machine to get to the fault cos I don't want to cause more faults on the way.

So if anyone knows what this fault may be your technical advice would be most appreciated. My contact address is [email protected] if anyone can help me.

CheersTroy

I have a VO-5850 that is doing something very wierd. It will record audio & video and will only play back in rewind or ffwd. Does not read counter.... Counter will count if a tape is used that was recorded on other machine. Seems that there is no time code when it records to tape. How can I fix this? We are on a very limited budget and cannot afford to have it fixed by a tech. Im willing to try as we are now using anothe unit without asemble edit, looks bad!

Ive just become the proud owner of my first (working) u-matic. Its the portable JVC CR-4700E. The picture quality seems very good, almost as good if not better than S-VHS dare i say, but I know this is all subjective. One thing for sure, theres seems to be no colour shift at all, but I believe this is a feature of the u-matic format. Anyway my question is, does any body have further information on this model, battery size etc, and perhaps a manual?Remove the extra @ sign in the email address

Oh and by the way who are these cretins who keep posting stupid comments nothing to do with u-matic in here.I thought Yahoo was for that

Hi

I have a front panel, the bit which swings up, from a BVU 800. All the bulbs work, the jog shuttle wheel works correctly and it's clean. So if yours is a little worse for wear this is for you. Its free to a good home in UK mainland, delivered free,to be collected from your nearest main line railway station
