Hi Tom, I think you should search for a standard CCU/VTR cable on E-Bay. I'm not really sure what connector is used on the M7 and the VO8800. How many pins do the "big" connectors on either have? SP quality with a TBC is rock solid, so if the portable is working properly you're supposed to be blown away :)

Eric, Thanks again. The CCU-VTR cable is 16 pin to 26 pin. I am surprised to be having so much trouble finding these. Maybe everyone is holding on to them, since they are out of date?

I also am having difficulty finding the 4 pin DC cables for both the camera and the VO8800.I can buy an AC to DC converter easy enough, but can't find the female four pin XLR plugs to mate up with the Sony equipment.

If you have any tips for me, I'll Appreciate it.

Thanks again.

Tom

Tom:

You shouldn't have any problems finding 4-pin XLR plugs, they are quite common. But if all else fails, there is a lead for auction on eBay:http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2988275810&category=21165

Hi Tom, the power XLR is used very commonly today. Just go to Radio Shack and ask them anything that fits :) Only pin 1 and 4 are used. I'll have to look it up which one was + and which one is - though.

you might first want to check if the portable is working properly before buying an expensive cable. Yes, they are quite rare nowadays, some local TV stations are willing to pay serious money for a good working CCU cable.

Power the portable up (you might want to use a car battery or some old laptop or PC power supply) and insert tape. Use the composite in/outputs to check if the portable plays/records without "tape slack"-warnings and all that. If you can't get it to work, there's little use in buying a VTR cable until you can.

Graz asked, "PLEASE HELP! How do I get a vo5850 out of standby mode?? "

Don't know about this exact machine but a VP5030 I just aquired was also stuck. It turned out to be expecting a remote contol pad thus ignoring the front panel. It was stuck because the rear panel switch had fallen apart (probably been knocked hard in transport).

Hi Frank

First connect a monitor to the Monitor Output, not Video Out, of the machine. Switch the Counter/TC switch to Menu Dial. Then push the Search Dial, all 3 LED's light up.Turn the Search Dial whilst pushing down the Menu Button, this will set you through the menu's. Hours will be displayed in menu 205 & 206. If these menu's don't show, go to menu 200, push the Data button and turn the Search Dial to change the setting to Enhanced. Now you will see menu 205 & 206. Good luck

Roger - I have not a clue. I remember that the P148 had some extra boards in if it was used with the touchscreen as opposed to the keypad. I got rid of all that kit some time ago. If you check the Betacam chatroom I was engaged in discussions with some other members quite some time ago (look at the early entries) and maybe one of them may be able to help with a manual or something.

My VO-9800 has recently started chewing tapes. It will edit fine for a while and then go into 'Error 02', which locks up the machine. After powering down and back up again, if I don't get it into 'Rewind' quickly, it starts chewing up the tape. It seems to happen more with KSP tapes than other tapes.Suggestions anybody?

After having been a user of Low Band U-Matic since 1976 - and an editor for TV jobs using a pair of 2750's with a Convergence ECS-1B edit controller between 1977 and 1980 (followed by a brand new VO5800 +5850 combo), I now have a massive archive of Lowband UMatic, BVU abd BVU-SP camera original masters, edit sub-masters, edit masters and general intermediate stuff that I need to digitise to DV and into NLE for archiving. I have the option of hiring a VO9600 (PAL), but the duration required for the hire would make it uneconomical, so I'm on the lookout to buy one such machine instead.

If anybody has, or knows of the availability of, one in good condition I'd be interested to know. One recently went for £100 on eBay, and that's the kind of money I'm looking to spend (bearing in mind that my old VO5850 cost £2,999 in 1981).

Any info most welcome.

Cheers

Colin (Milton Keynes, UK)

The Sonu U-Matic Series 5 Lowband machines didn't facilite a timecode track - only the VO9*** and BVU series machines did. What people used to do was to allocate one of the audio tracks to timecode striping and then use a reader to pick it up. This was often used in offline editing of 1" C and BVU/BVU-SP tapes. Lowband U-Matic machines only used Control Track, unless they were modified by companies like Hamlet of Chesham.

OK, I'm back... with another question. By the way, thanks a lot for the answers about 'ABL' above. A week ago, I've been trying to connect a Sennheiser ME-66 mic to a Sony DXC-M3A. This is a fairly recent XLR shotgun mic, powered by a penlite. While the sound was ok, I've noticed that the sound starts clipping pretty badly at any level above someone talking. I suspected the portable first, but it looks like the camera can't handle the level at mic level. On line level, the output is (ofcourse) very low.

I've fixed it by soldering a 50k variable resistor in the camera and turning down the level. I've connected the 50k-pins to + and -, and the output runs where + used to run to. It sounds ok now, but I wonder if I've done everything the way I'm supposed to.

Thanks for any thoughts.

I have bought a VO6800PS from ebay, finally got a tape, finally found i needed more watts to make it lace up. All fine so far, it will play, fast forward and rewind but wont record because the pause remains on and wont swicth off using the pause button. I think Ive seen this before on here. Does it need to be triggered from the camera ( i dont have a umatic cord just video in) or can it be over ridden? Be greatful for some help

Bob, about your canon mv100.... You don't need any drivers for a firewire connection, that's the good part. You might need some if it has USB-capabilities for still-images, etc. The bad part is that there's multiple firewire drivers, while e.g. Premiere only can work with Microsoft's firewire driver. Have you checked the brand in the Hardware Device Manager? If it says, Texas Instruments or something, it might be the cause of the problem.

The saga of my VO6800 continues. Ive solved the problem on the pause button - I wasnt pumping a signal to the recorder, so it obviously needs the input to trigger it. Dont think me stupid, I just wanted to get the pause of before i tried recording, Now everything works fine except the damn thing wont record anything on tape. It plays my new tape (blacked) fine but sjust shows snow on any section i record. One good sould has already emailed me about cleaning it, which I have done, but playback heads misy be fine anyway to play back the blacked tape. Im using the line in (video in socket) swithced to line) I suspect its a bigger fault than cleaning and would like to try the camera in before throwing this very cheap machine against the wall:) Does anyone know the pins for the camera in. Found something about K socket 14 pin but nothing on Q. It would be nice if the site carried this information. And cleaning instructions for us sad newbies..Thnaks a lot..hoping for replies

David,Camera pin-out, try this : http://www.rcrowley.com/SonyPinout.htm

When you send a signal to the Line-in, does it show at the Line-out? Also, try to get a tape with an image, rather than black, so you can check the actual output. If you want to send a tape to Sydney, I'll record some colourbars on it for you ;-)Cleaning, have you cleaned the erase head - the large static head before the drum?

Thanks Rod, i presume i can just hook up to the video in pins to put a signal in. I'll try cleaning the erase head too. Every little helps.

VO6800 final chapter: Well, I took Alans advice and tried cleaning with paper, Tied camra in though the signal is required to be genlocked, got some pretty lines as a signal. Tried cleaning the erase head, but that must be working because the blacked tape signal is erased. I guess theres just a funny little thing inside not working. Yes Rod I do get a signal on video out but thats a straight connection isnt it, not from the tape. I guess I either find a repairer , but Im guessing that it will be expensive ( I only paid £12 for it) or put it back up on Ebay as spares or repair. Thanks for your help guys, I ll look out for another machine thats sold as working as opposed to "no reason why it shouldnt work"

Hello! I need to find a manual for a U-Matic BVU-800, and also need (showing part nos.): a resolution chart, XWV1400RB900; an auto-centering set, YVF8RA0032BN; and, a registration chart, YFV8RA0011A3. I'm also interested in a portable deck with genlock/blackburst. Thanks for any help! My best, Roger Cloud.
