Hi all,I have a Sony VO-5850P and a VO-5800PS U-Matic unit and I am wondering if it is possible to convert these machines to high band? I'm not sure if they are currently high band or not. Also, the 5800ps has a slight tracking problem and I was told that I new pinch roller should do the trick. Does anyone know f a spare parts supplier in Australia for these models? Many thanks in advance.

underneath each cassette there should be a red plastic lug which is removed to stop recording taking place

if you do not see a red plug anywhere, look for the round hole and fill it - then you should be able to record

Hello. I'm new here but I was hoping someone could help me with a problem I have.

I have a BVU-800 and when I put a tape in it just sits there and does nothing. It tries to do something but can't. The lights are one too. I manually move the gear box for the loading mechanism and wham! It works. I'm thinking a new belt or the gear box needs to be re-greased. It's hard to know because I bought it as a broken item off of e-bay. Infact the seller couldn't get it to even power up. I've pretty much fix it all up except for that. I'm totally new to BVU-800. I used to have a VO5800 and it was alot different as far as make up.

Any help would be greatly appreicated. Thanks.Chris

Hello.

I am having a problem with my BVU-800. It won't thread the tape or do anything unless I manually move the gear on the gear box. Is the gears gone or does it need a new belt? I bought it used so I'm not sure how long it has sat. The gears just may need to be greased. Any help is appreciated.

I have an opportunity to purchase a VP 9000 (used but working) for $ 800 USD. Someone else told me that I should'nt pay more than $500. Can anyone tell me what the going rate is for one? I haven't been able to find any references to price on-line.

I wouldn't pay that much, esp. for a USED deck. Try ebay (http://www.ebay.com) for a used player. I think that anything upwards of $250 for a player is just a rip-off.

Sorry Jesse. But I just got her and I like her. It works when once I get the tape to thread so it's not the worst thing. I used to have a V05800 and I thought that was great. Now I got the BVU-800 and it blows the VO5800 away. You can find BVU-800 's going very cheap now on E-bay.

I was stunned. I used to see them going for atleast 300. Now they can't sell them for 150, and that's working! Check it out.

Dino,

Is it a VO-9850 or a BVU-950? Never heard of a BVU-9850. But if it uses a TBC it must be a BVU-950. The Y/C output is not a Y/C 443 and not compatible with SVHS or Betacam SP. Convertors may be available but probably expensive.

Hi everybody! I have a problem with an old 3/4" VCR: JVC PR-900E. The problem is this: when I insert the tape, the VCR give me the error message 72. The user's manual tells me: "supply reel motor stops". Sometimes I get the error not immediately after the insertion of the tape but a few seconds after I have tried to move the tape with PLAY or using the JOG/SHUTTLE wheel (both in FWD or RWD direction). Anybody can help? I cannot find any service manual. Sometimes the VCR works fine... if I move by hand the tape wheels a little and insert the tape again, sometimes the VCR starts.. but I need it works fine always! I know this VCR has no value at all now because of new digital format, but I would like to keep it in my studio fully working (it has so nice colored button lights!) Hope somebody can help me. Thank you!

Another thing about this Sony VO9800P - was the timecode reader an optional extra ? I have a tape with timecode that was made on a BVU800P... this VO9800 light's up it's "timecode" light during playback - but the display only ever ready the control track regardless if the switch is in the CTL or TC position for the time display.

Also anyone know anything about the "dial menu" - if I select it the time display flashes "15" ??

Thanks,

Keith

Hey Chris!

Sounds like it could be a gear with broken/missing tooth or something is frozen/needs lube. You are on the right track. Check everything related to the tape loading mechanism.

If it should move freely make sure it does, look for anything unusual or broken pieces. Check all you can topside thats easy to access.

You may have to get under it for a really effective troubleshooting, prepare yourself for possibly mean dissassembly of the machine and write down what you do, because they dont make them easy to repair. Thats so you have to take it in for Service! lol.

good luck.

Is the SONY VO-5630 a lowband or highband Umatic ?

Rein Oosterling
Thursday 9th January 2003
9:03 pm U.K.

[email protected]

Berny,

You can use high-band tapes in SP machines. You will have high-band quality which is close to SP quality.

Keith,

The time code reader/generator was optional for the VO-9800/9850. The reader/generator is positioned behind the control panel. (BKU-704 is a time code reader and the BKU-705 is a time code reader/generator) To operate the dial menu you need the users manual. A monitor connected to the output shows the data and items selected. (Don't forget to supply video to the input of the VCR). Maybe 15 is an error code. But the monitor screen will tell you that. If it is an error code and you want to know what it means I can look it up in the manual.

K McHugh,

The TBC can not be integrated inside the VO-9800/9850. You can only use an external TBC.

Mark,

The VO-5630 uses the RM-420, RM-555 or RM-500. If you want to record frame by frame you need a timecode based editing system. The VO-5630 is not accurate enough. You can use for instance a VO-9850 or even better BVU-950 with its internal editing controllers.

Tim,

The VO-5630 is low-band.

Hello to you all,

I have just bought a JVC BY-110 studio tube camera (which is also 'portable' by virtue of its battery system). For static use, I have a domestic Panasonic S-VHS VCR and, whilst I have yet to test the camera on it, it seems to outperform domestic VHS by a country mile, not to mention outperforming DVD-R too (except at top quality one-hour-maximum settings). I have also bought a Panasonic NV-100 portable professional VHS VCR to do location work. Whilst I shall be happy with this as an 'entry level' portable recorder, I am wondering if I would get significantly better results from a U-matic (as it is only 60 lines per picture better for an SP model).

So, my questions are these: 1. Because of the extra 100 lines per picture, for S-VHS over U-matic, would it be best to continue with my S-VHS video as the 'static' machine, or should I go for a U-matic SP deck? 2. For portable use, should I either: a) use the Panasonic NV-100 pro VHS that I have; b) try (if possible and within a moderate price range) to find an S-VHS portable; or c) find a reasonably priced portable U-matic SP? 3. What might I expect to pay for these various options?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please forward any answers to [email protected]

Kind regards,

Marcus J. Swift

HELP PLEASE...

I have to get some High Band Umatic material off the original tapes and into a Non Linear Edit system at the highest possible quality. I have either a Sony 9600 U-matic or a JVC 900E machine available to transfer from. I have been trying to find a good way of converting the DUB output of either machine to S-Video or DV format, so far to no avail.

Has anybdy any ideas at all as to how I can do this?

Is there a magic black-box somewhere which will accept DUB in and give S-VIDEO or DV out?

I seem to remember that there was a JVC 1U high TBC unit on the market not long ago, which would accept DUB signals in and output others, but I cannot remember it's designation; and I can't remember whether it outputed S-Video or Component!

Panasonic marketed a UTP-1 Transcoder that did a little of everything. Pretty sure it had Y-688 and Y/C 3.58 ins and out, they are 7p dub I believe (a la JVC), no 4p S-video connectors on this unit. Now you have to FIND one.

NOw can someone answer MY question...

I heard there is a way to convert a Fujinon Zoom Demand (like SRD-91) so it will control a Canon Zoom lens. Basically a matter of switching wires around.

Has Anybody done this before and can explain the process???

****HOW CAN I GET THE VIDEO FROM THE 3/4" TO A FIREWIRE HARD-DRIVE. I REALLY NEED SOME HELP. THANK YOU.***

All you can do is run the Video Out from the 3/4' machine to a video capture card with BNC or RCA video inputs and create an AVI, MPEG or similar file and then store the file on your HD.

There is FREE software on the Web that I have used to make simple AVIs from videotape that looked pretty decent. Hook your VTR up to the card like it was the TV monitor (video and audio)

I have a VO-5600 and makes a horrible screeching noise when tapes are rewinding fast. It doesn't happen in any other function. Does anyone know what this could be?? Thanks

The sreeching noise is probably worn or dry reel tables. You can remove each reel table by undoing the single screw at the top of each one,be careful not to damage the brake bands, use a smidgeon (is that word in the dictionary?) of light oil on the spindles, and replace the reel tables and try again. Alternatively there are new reel tables in stock athttp://www.umatic.icom43.net.

Hey all. This is a two part query.

Firstly.I have access to some U-Matic HB and SP gear which, of course, I'm going to buy. At some point in the future I intend to buy a JVC KY-15/KY-17 to use for field work.Obviously BetaCam would be the best format for docking but a little expensive, I'm loathed to resort to S-VHS. What would be the best choice for docking to the camera to work with out current U-Matic studio gear?

Secondly.Does anyone have, or can point me in the direction of, Schematics for Remote Zoom and Focus, controls?Or Perhaps some other electronics type person, may be comfortable opening up their controls and drawing said schematic.I have a Fujinon VCL-1012BY and I would like to take advantage of the remote sockets.Since I'm confident that I could build units to control these functions, I don't really want to spend the excessive money to buy a unit.

Thanks very much

JVC PR-900E: I need help. The problem of my editing BVU videorecorder is this: just after inserted the tape, when I select play, or FF or RW or I use the jog/shuttle operation after a few seconds the VCR stops and I get the error code 72 which means "supply reel motor stops". At that point all controls except ERJECT are inoperative. Can anybody help me? Thank you

Dear all,My question isn't U-Matic related. However, as there are a number of "video veterans" on this board, I hope to get some help. I purchased a JVC BY110 three tube camera on eBay. It seems that it has a slight burnin (hope this is the correct English word for it) on one of the tubes. I've noticed a small grey spot in the middle of the camera image. I've heard that there are some techniques to remove this spot without having to change the whole tube. Something like filming a particular colour or grey card for a couple of minutes. Anyway, I really hope someone is able to help me :-)Thanks a lot & greetings from Austria,

Berny.

Hello u-maticians,

I have a very nice (external TBC) for sale.It is a I.DEN IVT-9SP. It works perfecty in PAL, don't know about NTSC.It has composite/yc/component inputs and 1xcomposite 2xyc 2xcompn't dub-outputs.This page seems to have one too: http://www.rentcom.com/catalog/Video_Processing.html

Drop me a line if you are intrested.Might trade for other stuff, e.g. a Sennheiser ME-66/67 microphone.

Keep U-Matic going!Eric (Netherlands)

Steve, I have got the male connectors (brand new) but no females. I have also got a 14 male to 14 female cable. What are you tring to connect the camera to? Since your mistake ( Name: Steve Magee Email: [email protected]) there will probably be a lack of equipment postings on this site!

Berny, You can point the camera to a perfectly even illuminated white chart. Make sure that the reflected light has the right colour temperature of 3200 Kelvin or when you use the daylight filter on the camera 5600 Kelvin. Better, if possible use the camera. If the burned-in area (usualy the red tube) isn't too bad it will disappear very slowly.

Berny, obscuring this burned-in area can take up a few days and you don't need to have the camera switched on.

Panasonic F10

I'd like to know more about pro cameras, as I have never had the opportunity to play with one. Often when cameras are sold, people talk of them being dockable to different formats such as Betacam or MII etc. I was wondering if there was any kind of standard for this docking.

Now Umatic recorders don't dock right? They use little portapak type things. I'm wondering how much of a standard there is for this too! I mean can a panasonic F10 be connected to a Sony umatic portable recorder, or would you need a panasonic one?

Lastly tripods! Now pro cameras talk a lot of tripod plates. I have no real idea what they are like or how standard they might be. I assume you can't stick a camera like an F10 on top of a high street style camcorder tripod? Apart from the weight and the tiny top, I assume the actual interface is different?

Well if anyone cann answer these questions then that would be greatI I'd love to hear more about cameras that I might not know too! :)

Lo, High or SP

I'm wondering which models of umatic are lo, hi, or sp?

For instance what is a vo5630? Often with the SP models it is quite easy to see the sp logo in photos.

Not so with high band, so I'm wondering if anyone can tell me which umatic machines are high band.

Monochrome switch.

Right, apparently, umatic machines have a switch which makes the machine run in monochrome but increases the resolution. Is it only low band machines that have such a switch? If not, does flicking the switch on an sp model or a high band model, increase the resolution even further beyond the realms of the resolution that High band or even SP are normally capable of?

I assume this works by using colour area on the tape to store further video information?

Do the little portable recorders have such a switch?

What is the compatibility of such tapes? Given that any umatic machine is supposed to be able to play a tape in monochrome, Will they play on all 3 standards?

I'd love to hear more about this as the information I have so far is kind of vague.

More about the monochrome mode

I've been looking at the machine specifications for the machines on the palsite.

The SP machines seem to have less resolution than what I assume are high band machines with mono mode. Presumably as they have no mono mode as such?

Most curious however is the BVU800. I assume it is a missprint, as it claims to have 370 line colour and 260 lines mono. I assume it to be the other way around, however, I'm wondering if the figure of 370 is true for the BVU 800? It is a fair bit more than the other recorders with mono mode which only manage 340 lines. Perhaps this is because it is high band?

If so, my assumption would be the following:

SP - No Mono Mode, same as colour resolution. 300 linesHi - 370 lines, special high band mono mode? 260 lines colourLo - 340 lines in Mono Mode, 250 ColourPortable recorders have no mono mode.

The BVU800 is high band right?Does this sound right to anyone?

Oops it mangled my list!

------------SP - No Mono Mode, same as colour resolution. 300 lines

Hi - 370 lines, special high band mono mode? 260 lines colour

Lo - 340 lines in Mono Mode, 250 Colour

Portable recorders have no mono mode.

-----------

Does this seem right?

Anybody looking to sell a BVU800 reasonably cheaply?

I'm interested in playing with the monochrome mode.

Also does anyone know anything about JVC high band machines? Do they have a higher resolution mono mode like Sonys?

Lastly, what about the hospital designated machines. They default to monochrome, is their resolution higher than that of conventional umatic?

Hey all.

Please does anyone have schematics for zoom and focus lense controllers suitable for use with my Fujinon VCL-1012BY?I'm loathed to resort to buying units for a high price when I know I could build them myself, if I understand more about their workings.

Also I have just aquired a huge bundle of SONY U-matic tapes.Several KSP, XBR and BRS series.I understand that KSP=SP XBR=HB and BRS=LB, but does anyone know of any distinguising features of the cassettes themselves? I have found tapes that are clearly 60 min (since its printed on the cassette) with a 20XBR label on it and in 20XBR case, this proves that the case and tape do not always correspond. This also throws into doubt whether the tapes are indeed the format we think they are.

My buddy thinks he has found a possible colour trend with the cassettes themselves.KSP=deep burgundy/brown, BRS=slate grey.I'm a not confident of this trend at all. Can anyone clarrify? Is there perhaphs a way to tell from the serial numbers?

Also, we have a bunch of SONY KCS-xxK/KCA-xxK (where xx is the length, 10,20 ,30. ..)I can't find anything about these anywhere. Can anyone tell me more about them? What format they were designed for?

Thanks very much.

Hiya Gareth! I would have thought that the low band tapes, being normal oxide type video tape would be more likely to be brown and the hi band and sp tapes would be silver. :)

Low band tapes should be more like VHS tape stock whereas, the higher band stuff is supposed to be of a more mettalic formulation.

I'm not at all sure what the difference in actual tapes would be between high band and SP and would be interested to hear! I though it was more to do with the recording format with high band and SP. Clearly this is not the case.

Freya,

Betacam and MII are not compatible. (Although some Panasonic camera's are designed to dock with betacam.) An example: I bought a Panasonic camera a few years ago, which was according to the salesman, dockable with Panasonic MII and Panasonic SVHS. It was only dockable with one or two older MII model VCR. The salesman probably also didn't know this? Panasonic changed connectors sometime in the past. What I want to say is that even staying with one brand doesn't guarantee compatibility. So check thorougly before you buy. This also goes for tripod plates and in a lesser extend portapack/camera connections. I am not sure but I believe that all connecting cables are available to connect different camera's to different portapacks. (These cables can be expensive).

Hey Freya.

Unfortunaly the tape is likely to look very similar. Since the 'metal tape' just uses metal oxide particles, in the same way as LB tape. It is a back coating which is then sealed with polymer. So I don't think it looks that different.

As I mentioned the only possible 'pattern' we have is the color of the cassettes, but also as mentioned I'm very doubtfull that there is actualy any correlation between cassette color and tape format.

Hope fully somwone will be able to shed some light on this.
