Assemble Edit:
- This is a method of editing operation which lays down a new control
track.
Balanced:
- This term refer to a way of connecting audio between VTRs using 3-pin XLR
connectors. Using Balanced Audio reduces noise pick up introduced through
interference.
Bandwidth:
- Measure of the finest detail that can be recorded and played back (resolution).
BVU:
- BVU Broadcast Video U-matic (High band/SP).
BVU-SP:
- Recording in which the luminance FM deviation is from 5.6 to 7.2 MHz and the colour under frequency is 924 kHz.
BRS:
- Series of Sony U-matic tapes intendd for Hi-Band use.
Cross Talk:
- Interference of one signal with another.
Colour Frame:
- This is a part of the PAL colour signal through which color information
is synchronised together. Most U-matic machines have a switched to disable
synchronisation in this manner to enable faster editing times.
Colour Lock:
- This refers to the way in which the colour circuits in the VTR lock to
the colour signal of an incoming or off tape signal. Sometimes manual
adjustment is required by use the select switch located on the rear of
machines.
Drop Out:
- Situation where the playback signal from the tape is temporarily lost or significantly reduced.
Dub:
- This term can refer to the editing process or replacing audio/video tracks but is more
oftern used to refer to the Y/C DIN video input/output connectors.
Dynamic Tracking:
- System where video heads follow the video tracks during low and variable speed
playback giving noise free pictures. Implemented in later models only.
Editing Equipment:
- Equipment used to compile a finished programme from tapes and other sources.
EFP:
- Electronic Field Production.
ENG:
- Electronic News Gathering.
Frame Code:
- Absolute address system for each frame from 0 to 29,999 recorded in the vertical blanking interval.
Guard Band:
- Space between adjacent recorded tracks (fields) to eliminate crosstalk.
High Band:
- Recording in which the luminance FM deviation is from 4.8 to 6.4 MHz and the colour under frequency is 924 kHz.
Hooking:
- Term which refers to the playback picture tearing at the top of the screen.
Insert:
- This is term which refers to editing operations which do not
lay down a new control track. This type of editing opertion requires the use
of a pre-striped tape (tape on to which a continious control track has been laid).
Jog
- Tape transport function allowing frame advance/retard of tape. Used for
editing.
KSP:
- Series of Sony U-matic tape intended for Standard U-matic use.
KCA :
- Prefix used to identify large size U-matic cassette tapes.
KCS:
- Prefix used to identify small size U-matic cassettes intended for
use in portable units.
Lo-Band U-matic:
- The standard U-matic fomrat in which the luminance FM deviation is from 3.8 to 5.4 MHz and the colour under frequency is 685 kHz.
Master:
- This is the recodring VTR in an edit suite. To function as a master machine
a VTR needs to be capable of insert editing.
Mode:
- This is the way in which a U-matic can operate. Options include,
local, TBC and edit.
Monitor Selector:
- This is the control on the front of the VTR whcih selects which audio
tracks appear on the headphone and Monitor output sockets.
Monitor Output:
- This is an audio output on the rear of the VTR which is used to monitor
audio.
NTSC:
- American Standard for T.V. transmission. (National Television Standard Committee).
PAL:
- European (excluding France) T.V. Standard. (Phase Alternating Line).
Portables:
- Minimum size VTR mainly for ENG applications.
Pre-Roll:
- This refers to the sequence of events before and edit begins during which
the plyer and recording VTRs are synchronised.
Remote connector:
- This is either the 36-pin parallel or 9-pin serial connector on the
back of the VTR through which the machine is controlled by an external device.
RS-422C:
- Standard serial data transmission format.
SECAM:
- French T.V. Standard (Sequentiel Couleur a Memoire).
SP:
- Superior Performance. U-matic format variant using chrome tape
offering improved colour and black and white detail (resolution) and
better separation of colours.
Standard U-matic:
- Recording in which the luminance FM deviation is from 3.8 to 5.4 MHz and the colour under frequency is 685 kHz.
Also known as Low band.
Skew:
- This refers to a tape tracking adjustment. If the playback pictures
suffers from 'hooking' then the SKEW setting is incorrect will need to be adjusted.
Slave:
- The VTR used as a player in an edit suite. Usually a play only
(VO series) machine.
Sub-carrier:
- The signal on which the video colour information is carried. Equal to
6.85991MHz Lo-Band/9.83803MHz Hi-Band.
Time Base Corrector:
- A device for removing jitter (time base errors) from the signal played back by a VTR (essential if using a special effects generator/vision mixer).
Time Code:
- Longitudinal Time Code (LTC). Absolute address for each frame in hours, minutes, seconds and frames recorded on a dedicated (address) track used by BVU. Vertical Interval Time Code (VITC). The same as above but recorded in the vertical interval on lines 17 and 18 by the video heads.
Unbalanced:
- This refers to a way of connecting audio signals using wires carring a
single core and screen.
Vertical Interval:
- Non-visible (off-screen) part of a video picture signal.
XBR
- Series of Sony U-matic tapes for use in the SP mode.
