Ampex 198 is known to be problematic and prone to 'sticky tape syndrome'. You will need to get the tapes treated before you can play them. And you probably find that the machines you used for testing will need to have the heads cleaned too. Neither is complicated if you know what to do. Where are you situated?

Hi!
Having a bit of trouble with some AMPEX BETACAM 198 BC-20 tapes (red ones from 1987). Tried on multiple machines. Getting ERROR messages up the wahzoo (usually while rewinding). Not sure if it's because the tapes are just old or if I'm doing something wrong here. Machines are a Sony BVW-70 and a Sony PVW 2600.
Also, does the color of the tape mean anything?
Thanks in advance!

Hi all! I've managed to get my hands on a SONY BETAMAX C7. The machine is in perfect condition in and out, except for a wobbly horizontal picture on playback. I've removed what seems to be a BLUE SANYO CAPACITOR .47 / 25, and the picture is now perfect but I have a wobbly sound. Can anyone help me with sourcing a replacement capacitor, or advise me if there's anything else wrong? Kind regards, Craig.

Can we shut down the U-matic page? It is getting embarrassing that nobody cares enough about it to actually clean it up.
The childish spamming has been going on for some weeks now.

Kevin, many thanks for that. This is the same machine that you serviced for me a VERY long time ago, and it is still doing the business...another testament on this site to your preservation skills!
By the way, do you do any repairs on PCB's, specifically for Video2000 format recorders?
Cheers.

Philip:
The problem with your Sanyo 5150 is common to that model.
It is to do with heat/temp change.
Sanyo upgraded the earthing type from the VTC 5000 model (which does'nt suffer as much,if at all with that)by installing a second earthing strap.
What i always do is remove the metal bracket (by removing the screw) and slide it off the head amp can. Then bend the two tail ends of the bracket( that slide over the can) slightly inwards.
This enables a better contact and more reliable result. I've not had any issues return this way.
Good luck...............Kevin

HELLO all! I have an issue with a Sanyo VTC5150 which seems to be getting worse: at times, the picture seems to suffer from a 'fish-scales' effect (noticeable horizontal wavy lines), and is much worse on tapes which are past their best. The problem can be more or less cured by pressing down on the shield plate over the head drum, and/or pressing down on the metal bracket which contacts the top of the VP-1 PCB...is this some sort of earth/shielding fault?
Any help appreciated, and if I can offer any information to anyone from the VTC5150 service manual, please let me know, as I have recently acquired one.
Cheers.
Phil

Hi everyone
Just thaught I'd share this with you:
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=111082489382#description
This guy had 2 of these machines, I got the first of them and can onnestly say that it really really is in top condition with no scuf-marks what soever! He does ship abroad if you ask, so if there should be anyone inhere that would be intrested in this top model in like new condition, then I'd start bidding if I were you.
And no no I am not afiliated with the seller at all, I am simpley just a happy buyer thinking I would spred the news, now that he actually has 2 of these for sale!
All the best from Allan

Hi
I would NEVER recommend using one of those "wet type" cleaning tapes on a VCR. If you use to much fluid, there is change it will get stuck on the drum. And cause damage to delicate heads.
If you use Older tapes branded tapes that flakes a little or is dirty, i would look for a Tape Rewinder. (I have always used a Rewinder on my Beta tapes) Due to machine keeps the tape laced around the drum.
Many video tape rewinders offer a "Cleaning" option of the tape.
Clean your VCR manual. There is a guide on this very page how you handle that. Otherwise if you insist using a cleaning tape, use the Non wet types. They come from Sony & Maxwell.
A gentleman called Mr. Betamax also supply those, along with good quality branded tapes.
Kind regards
Emil

Hi I have a VTC5000 which I did a full mechanical overhaul on and it worked fine afterwards but the clock was flickering. So I replaced the faulty electrolytic that was causing it and now the power supply appears to be dead. Has anybody got a circuit diagram of the PSU please ?

Noel, you can find all the old messages here:
http://www.chatpage.co.uk/betamax/archive.html
Be aware that it does go back to the very beginning of the board AND has all the spam too so it will take some time to load.

The problem is not the first board, it is the second within the heat sink tin, this takes in 12v and converts to 6v AC, 48v dc and 32v dc if memory serves. The 12V supply section of the Power supply is working fine. The board looks in a bad shape and looks like it has been tampered with before so a complete replacement would be preferred,

Alex,
Its OK I found your request telling me its an SLHF950UB on another site.
There is another way to solve your problems, just throw that old board away.
That main AC/DC board converts down to 12V at a maximum of 4Amps required for the DC/DC convertor board that does the rest. Thee are efficient outboard laptop computer 240VAC/ 12V DC switch mode supplies that can do the job for you available on eBay.
You just need to mount a 2.1mm DC socket on the rear of the SLHF950 and connect that trough to the white plug that connects to the next board. Either use the socket off the main board to make a lead or cut off the original plug and solder to extend the wiring. Then plug in the external supply to get the machine back into operation.
You can mount the supply in the space left from the part you took out but that requires more work and you can get coupling effects and interference from the switchmode supply to the tuner. AS you don't have analogue TV anymore that might not be an issue.

Bought a new tv today and connected my Betamax player and it worked :) However, the whole time I played the video, it jumped all the way through. It also kept switching from color to black and white. Also, it was very hard to hear the people speaking even when the volume was turned right up. So, I tried a few other tapes and the same thing kept happening. Is it safe to say that, this betamax is dead? The Sony C6
